Stop Procrastinating by Decreasing Distractions
Have you ever set a goal that you were fired up to achieve, but then for some reason you weren’t able to make progress towards it? This is a common issue and in today’s mindset minute, I’m going to give you an idea about why this happens and a few strategies to try to nip it in the bud.
A major contributor to procrastination is impulsivity. Impulsivity is just a fancy word for distraction. What happens is we start off with the best of intentions, but then life gets in the way and we get distracted. When we take our focus off of our goal, it’s easy to lose motivation and stop making progress.
The best strategy for cutting impulsivity down to size, while increasing focus on what you need to do, is to follow these three steps:
- Be specific. What exactly do you want to achieve? What do you need to do and when do you need to do it? I recommend you take the time to write your goals down. Research shows that writing down our goals increases commitment and makes us more likely to achieve them. Get very clear on where you want to go because confusion and overwhelm are two of the biggest contributors to procrastination.
- Break it down. You should break your overall goal into very small steps - incremental goals if you will - that you can work on each and every day. This sets you up to have a success spiral where one small win leads to another which leads to another. The more important and complex your goal is, the more important it is to divide it into tiny bite sized chunks.
- Develop routines. Develop a system for taking action on the bite sized steps you outlined in step What will you do consistently each and every day? Go one step further and do your most important tasks at the start of the day. With consistency and dedication, you can achieve a lot by doing a little each day. Get focused and don't do anything else until after you have achieved your objective for the day.
Don't let another minute go by without deciding what goal it is you most want to achieve right now. Follow that up with by determining how you can get going on it right. this. minute. Now get out there, get really focused on what you want, and make it happen!
